About Kelly-Moore Paints
Kelly-Moore Paints is an American paint brand founded in 1946 in San Carlos, California. For more than 75 years it supplied interior, exterior, primer and high-performance coatings for homes and commercial buildings.
History
- 1946William Kelly and William Moore, both formerly of Glidden, found the company in San Carlos, California.
- 1952Moore buys out Kelly and keeps the brand name.
- 1984–1985Moore retires with revenue around $136 million. Joseph P. Cristiano becomes CEO.
- 1994–2000The company expands by acquiring Preservative Paint Co. (Seattle), K-M Universal and Ponderosa Paint Manufacturing.
- 1998The Moores set up an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP).
- 2017Manufacturing moves from the San Francisco Bay Area to Hurst, Texas.
- 2022Flacks Group of Miami acquires the company, then 157 stores, about 1,200 employees and roughly $400 million in revenue.
Today
In January 2024 Kelly-Moore announced it would close all stores and cease operations, other than filling existing orders from its distribution facility. The company said it could not carry the legal and financial burden of long-running asbestos litigation inherited from earlier decades.
In May 2024 Latex Paint S.A. de C.V. acquired Kelly-Moore’s intellectual property assets. Its licensee, Sayer Lack Mexicana, is expected to use them to expand international paint and coatings offerings.
